Gambino’s Italian Deli has a real story behind it. The owner, Jones, worked for an Italian family called the Gambinos back when they ran a sandwich shop during and after Prohibition. He learned the trade from the ground up, washing dishes, making sandwiches, and mastering meats like pastrami and salami. When he opened his own deli, he named it in their honor.
Back at Moon’s Sandwich shop, the neighborhood wanted pastrami and corned beef more than the traditional Italian meats, and that influence stuck. Jones carries both sides of that history. You can get classic Italian hero sandwiches loaded with salami, capicola, and fresh mozzarella, or you can order what the deli is known for: homemade pastrami that rivals the best you will find anywhere.
The menu covers hero sandwiches, hot sandwiches like meatball and eggplant parmesan, salads, sides, and soups. They also make charcuterie platters and have desserts including a giant chocolate chip cookie. Everything is available for pickup from their spot on South York Street.
