Hey Elmhurst! - LC's Diner

Elmhurst Is Getting a Retro American Diner!

An Elmhurst classic is getting new life!

If you’ve driven down Lake Street recently, you’ve probably noticed the construction at 544 W. Lake St.

This is the former home of Fred’s Place, a beloved greasy spoon diner that served Elmhurst for over 70 years before closing in early 2024.

Hey Elmhurst! - LC's Diner

LC’s Diner operated there briefly a year or two ago, but now they’re back with a complete renovation that’s going to transform the space!

Leslie and Carlos (the “LC” behind the name) are gutting the building to create a vintage-yet-modern American diner that honors the location’s history while giving it a fresh start.

From Fred’s Place to LC’s Diner

LC’s Diner is owned by Leslie and Carlos (hence “LC”) and they’re completely gutting the space to create a vintage-yet-modern American diner with an open kitchen!

LC’s Diner was actually open at this location a year or two ago, but it was a short run before they closed. Now, they’re back with a full renovation and a clear vision for what they want to create!

While they’re modernizing the building, they’re also preserving part of its history.

This space was Fred’s Place for decades, a no-frills, old-school diner that opened in the 1950s and became an Elmhurst institution. It was the kind of place with cracked concrete in the parking lot, a flattop grill that had absorbed 70 years of flavor, and waitresses who’d been there forever.

Basically, it was an Elmhurst classic.

People loved Fred’s for massive omelets, corned beef hash, patty melts, and the kind of hearty breakfast that kept you full all day.

Leslie and Carlos are honoring that legacy by saving part of the historic building while transforming the rest into something fresh. It’s a balance between respecting what came before and creating something new for Elmhurst.

What to Expect at LC’s Diner

LC’s Diner will serve breakfast and lunch with all the American diner classics you’re craving:

  • Salads
  • Sandwiches
Hey Elmhurst! - LC's Diner Menu

It’s solid diner food done right.

The design will have a vintage feel with modern touches, think classic diner aesthetic (booths, counter seating, that timeless diner energy) but updated and fresh.

And the open kitchen means you’ll be able to watch your food being made, which adds to the authentic diner experience!

They plan to be open 5:00 AM to 3:00 PM. That means early risers, construction workers, and anyone who needs a solid breakfast before the sun’s fully up will have a spot to go!

When Will It Open?

They’re in the middle of a complete gut renovation, so it’s going to take some time.

But Carlos is optimistic for a September 2026 opening, so as soon as I know more, I’ll let you know!
